Creative AI major at Mars College 2024
Come study generative AI with the whole Eden team on Mars
Last year on Mars was the first year of the Creative AI major, and our first step towards building Eden, a platform and toolkit for artists getting into generative AI. This year the whole Eden team will be at Mars, dedicated towards helping Martians master the art of generative media.
Life of an AI major on Mars
The Creative AI consists of workshops, classes, and applied projects, some technical and some non-technical. Majors will receive unlimited free generation credits to make awesome visual art. Classes pertain to helping practitioners get the most out of these tools, and learn how to use them for various ends.
In addition to making art, students will grapple with profound questions. We delve into the ethical considerations of AI's role in society, explore the cultural impact of machine-generated art, and ponder what it means to be creative in an age where algorithms can emulate human expression. This major is not just about mastering the tools; it's about understanding their broader implications and exploring what it means to be human in midst of this technological breakthrough.
The Creative AI major appeals to highly diverse and interdisciplinary people with varying motivations and incentives:
Artists: For those who want to push the boundaries of traditional digital art.
Scholars: Those with a background in philosophy or social sciences will find a fertile ground for exploring questions like the nature of creativity, the ethics of autonomous agents, and the societal impact of AI.
Educators: Those interested in educational technology will find opportunities to create AI-based educational platforms that can engage students in creative and interactive ways.
Technologists: For those who wish to deepen their expertise in a creative and supportive environment.
Misfits: Those interdisciplinary students who resist being siloed into a single discipline will enjoy the cross-pollination of ideas from computer science, art, philosophy, and humanities.
Role of Eden
Eden is an open-source platform for generative AI spearheaded by past and present Martians. It comes with a variety of tools, including:
Tools for personalizing and customizing models. For example, take a few photos of your favorite Martian and train Stable Diffusion to compose with them.
Train a version of Stable Diffusion on your own artworks, or custom styles and genres you wish to specialize the model towards. For example:
A tool for building autonomous agents/characters…
And then making animated videos of your characters speak monologues, debate each other in philosophy, and many other interactions, as well as deploying Discord bots that represent your character.
"Do a freestyle rap about an interplanetary rave party with aliens."
Eden also comes with a developer SDK which enables people to build new web applications and interactive installations on top.
Another cornerstone of the Creative AI major is the focus on language models. Students will learn to harness the power of advanced language technologies to create everything from interactive narratives and poetic compositions to personal assistants and conversational partners.
Eden plays a significant role in the Creative AI major, but it's not the only tool we use. Students will also have the opportunity to work with other state-of-the-art technologies, including ChatGPT.
If this sounds like it’s for you we encourage you to apply. Please fill out both the main Mars College application form and the form for the Creative AI major.
The deadline to apply is November 12, 2023.
